Rose-Tinted Novels Harm Relationships

11 Jul 2011

Lots of women devour the Mills and Boon style of literature but they might be receiving unrealistic expectations of a life filled with unbridled passions and STI-free encounters. This is the opinion of relationship expert Sue Quilliam who says that romantic novels discourage safe sex and let women feel that they are 'awkened' by a man rather than being in charge of their own desires.  This attitude is of course exactly what the philanderer wishes to encourage and the irrelevance of an annoying condom during a passionate illicit encounter is high on his agenda.  Quilliam notes that only 1 in 10 romance novels mentions 'condoms' and there is a correlation between the frequency of romance reading and negative attitudes to condom use.  So would be adulterous men would do well to seduce women who are ardent fans of the Mills and Boon genre.
