Spend a few festive days in Iceland with your mistress

Iceland could be the perfect place to spend a festive few days with your mistress before Christmas.

While you may not be able to spend Christmas day with your extra-marital lover, a romantic getaway beforehand could offer a good opportunity to get into the festive mood.

Sigga Groa Thorarinsdottir, area manager UK and Ireland from Visit Iceland, said Christmas is Iceland's longest holiday and that it is taken very seriously.

She said: "There is a great sense of Christmas spirit throughout the country making it an ideal place for a Christmas break and one of the hottest winter wonderlands.

"The cities have a festive atmosphere … As well as [the] usual market goods, Icelandic art and handicrafts such as Christmas tree decorations are sold, home made hot chocolate and waffles are available."

Ms Thorarinsdottir added that visitors can see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, which light up the Arctic skies with a green glow and that this is one of the world's most surreal natural phenomena.

According to Visit Iceland, 6,545 people from the UK visited the country in October.
