Emily Burns, head of events at English Heritage, said that haunted sites can offer a "hair-raising" experience.

She said: "If you're looking to do something different this Halloween, you should definitely head to your nearest English Heritage site for a thrilling spooky tour that's truly rooted in history."

One site that may be of interest for those looking to take their extra-marital lover on a haunted tour is Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire.

Locals report that there are mysterious noises and a chill in the air around the Gatehouse.

Staff at the castle also claim that a wooden cradle in one of the bedrooms has been seen rocking vigorously from side to side.

Ms Burns added that haunted events at Halloween are extremely popular so booking early is advisable.
