Marriage ruins sex lives
26 Aug 2010
Enjoying a bit of nookie is far less likely once you have walked the aisle, with around 60 per cent of couples claiming that getting married has ruined the excitement of sex. This is something that is perhaps known all too well by those having an adulterous relationship, as a recent study by OnePoll on behalf of Loving Links, the extra-marital dating website, found that a quarter of married people have had a bit on the side because of their dull sex lives.
Findings of the survey showed that before exchanging vows, randy couples would get a bit of nookie about four times per week. However, after three years of marriage, this had dropped to just once a week, if lucky.
It was also revealed that almost 80 per cent of married people would prefer a good night’s sleep over a bit of bedroom action.
Commenting on the results was a spokesman for Loving Links, who said: "A partner might be supportive, funny, intelligent, and kind, but if they don’t inspire confidence in the bedroom, or don’t meet expectations sexually life can be frustrating.
"And it is at times like this when eyes start to wander, and folk start to think about having a no-strings affair with someone else.
"After 14 years of providing a service where married people can look for sex elsewhere, we have good reason to believe many relationships are strengthened by a little out-of-marriage activity."
Perhaps the most astonishing finding from the survey was that nearly half of all married couples questioned said that they see their spouse more like a brother or sister than a husband or wife.
These findings very much support the notion that nowadays there is a growing trend among modern married couples to accept their partner playing away from home.
In fact, the survey found that a fifth of people said that they would understand if their partner confessed to having a secret affair. The same percentage agreed that should the opportunity present itself, they would indulge in a one night stand.
It also appears that the quality of sex within an adulterous relationship is much more rewarding than it is in a marriage.
Whereas eight out of ten couples said that they were in a sexual rut, having their sexual encounters at the same time and in the same position and place, of those who admitted to having an affair, two thirds said the sex was "mind blowing".
The spokesperson said: “Modern marriages are becoming a little more open where sex is concerned, and these days we are quicker to forgive if someone has a little one night stand.
"It is never nice to learn that our partners aren’t satisfied in the bedroom department, but if sleeping with someone else spurs couples on to make more of an effort with each other that can only be a good thing."
So those who are currently enjoying the benefits of an extra-marital love should rest assured that they are not alone and that their adulterous actions may in fact be helping to improve their marriage.
