Fifth of adults want an adulterous relationship One in five adults is in love with someone that is not their partner or spouse, meaning that around five million people either fantasise or partake in a secret affair.

A survey by OnePoll.com revealed that people were most likely to harbour feelings for a work colleague, a friend or an ex-partner.

A spokesperson for the market research company said: "Even in a happy relationship, it seems to be possible to have a wandering eye or even crave affection from another person.

"For those who can't control their lust, this usually leads to an affair."

The study showed that men were more likely to have romantic thoughts involving an extra-marital lover, with 22 per cent saying they could love two people, compared with only 15 per cent of women.

However, only six per cent of respondents said they would leave their partner for the object of their affections, suggesting that people can enjoy the benefits of a secret affair without ending a relationship.

Recent research supported the notion that men are more likely to have an affair as scientists discovered that there is a gene linked to cheating.
