Rich women more likely to have a young extra-marital lover

Although the common stereotype would have an older wealthier man enjoying an adulterous relationship with a mistress, research has found financially independent women also prefer a younger lover.

A study carried out at the University of Abertay Dundee revealed that older women were more likely to take the 'cougar' approach when looking for a bit of nookie.

The research, which will be published in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology, asked participants to 'design' their ideal partner.

Study author Dr Fhionna Moore said: "Financially independent women are more interested in their potential partner being physically attractive than in him being wealthy and will tolerate partners younger than themselves."

She added that this behaviour was much more typically seen in males and that the research suggested that gender differences in sexual behaviour are affected by culture as well as biological underpinnings.

This trend of older women getting a bit on the side from a younger attractive lover fits in with a number of celebrity relationships of late, including Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher or Madonna and Jesus Luz.
