If presented with a young, attractive, intelligent and interesting potential extramarital lover, the reasons to play away from home may be plentiful. However, according to psychologist David J Ley PhD, author of Insatiable Wives, Women Who Stray and The Men Who Love Them, adulterous liaisons involve a "complex pattern of behaviour" that makes them "tempting".
Writing for Psychology Today, he states that sex with a secret lover is often described as "incredible".
"When a sexual relationship first starts, our brains are flooded with neurochemicals that foster feelings of excitement, obsession and impulsivity," writes Mr Ley.
He went on to say that this can in-turn ignite the spark in a person's marital relationship, so that getting a bit on the side may actually boost your intimacy at home.
According to the author, adultery is a compelling issue that draws intrigue from all involved.
As well as those who are married but looking often getting excited by the idea of an extramarital affair, third parties are also equally as intrigued by details of secret affairs.
According to the ABC newspaper circulation figures, media coverage of celebrity adultery contributed to increased sales in titles such as the Mirror during February's 'infidelity month'.
