Blasphemy and infidelity are one in the same, claims writer
25 May 2010
In Islamic law blasphemy can be loosely defined as having the same characteristics of infidelity. That is the opinion of Dr Wan Azhar Wan Ahmed, a senior director at the Institute of Kefahaman Islam Malaysia, who wrote in the Star Online that there is no direct translation for the Christian equivalent of blasphemy in Muslim faith.
He said that the closest comparison is to describe blasphemy as an act of infidelity against Allah, suggesting that to defame the name of the Divine figure is to display unfaithfulness to the religion.
"Theologically speaking, blasphemy may overlap with or lead to infidelity, i.e. deliberate rejection of God and Revelation," writes Mr Ahmed.
His comments come after an Islamic Cleric claimed that women who dress provocatively in public both cause adultery and natural disasters such as earthquakes.
Luckily for those playing away from home, this is not an opinion that has any scientific support.
