Quarter of all couples playing away from home
17 May 2010
There is often much contention about how many couples are involved in extramarital liaisons. The main headache when compiling research data is caused by many people's unwillingness to disclose their adulterous ways.
However, new research from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) has suggested a factual statistic for the number of couples who are playing away from home.
In a recent study it concluded that one quarter of all marriages were subject to secret affairs, in one form or another.
"A figure which is even higher if you include cases with emotional infidelity, virtual internet relationships and other breaches of exclusivity," BACP said in a statement.
Such somewhat 'unconventional' forms of adultery can include the new phenomenon of sex texting or 'sexting'.
TV personality Vernon Kay was this year found to be exchanging raunchy messages with a string of SMS mistresses.
While he and others have not being unfaithful in the physical sense of the word, these actions hint to a whole new level of infidelity in the digital age.
