However, according to lifestyle magazine YourTango, there are ways you can spot and therefore avoid a disastrous date.

It recommends people steer clear of online daters who have several pictures that all depict the same facial expression, although not simply because it might suggest there are limited dimensions to their character.

"There's a reason he has nine pictures where he's smiling with his mouth closed. It's because he has extra teeth where teeth don't belong. Trust me," claims the website.

In addition, adulterers may wish to avoid anyone who states they are just looking for friendship, as this is unlikely to be true if they have created a suitor profile, particularly on a married dating website.

Research also suggests that usernames are equally as important and can make or break your chances of getting a bit on the side.
