A nationwide survey of almost 2,000 people by Tenerife.co.uk, which aimed to determine whether flying was the most common phobia, revealed the top ten fears of the British public.

While lubricant specialist Astroglide recently advised couples head to the zoo for a date with a difference, you may not want to take your bit on the side to the arachnid section, as spiders remain the top terror-inducer, with 54 per cent of people reporting arachnophobia.

Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, also seems to be the bane of the nation and could make any planned trips to the circus a big no-no for those hoping to get a bit of nookie.

In addition, cosying up with your secret lover in an intimate setting such as a hotel room may seem like the ideal way to spend an afternoon, just make sure you go for the king size option.

As well as coming across as a bit stingy with your money, your mistress could share the same fear as 23 per cent of people and have an adversity to confined spaces.

However, using internet dating sites to talk to others who are married but looking should ensure you get to know each others likes and dislikes, making your first date fun-filled and not fraught with fright.
