Adulterers must be wary of surveillance society
30 Mar 2010
It's often said that you are caught on CCTV 300 times a day, but adulterers need to be extra wary as a new survey shows it is not just the state that is keeping an eye on us.A poll of 1,000 couples by researchers at the London School of Economics, the University of Oxford and Nottingham Trent University found that a fifth of spouses admitted to checking their partner's emails and text messages.
In addition, while the internet is a playground for the unfaithful, one fifth of those questioned said they had retrieved their lover's browser history to determine whether internet activity involved infidelity.
Ellen Helsper, who led the study, told the Telegraph: "Our findings showed that there are surprisingly high levels of surveillance.
"One of the surprising findings was that surveillance was undertaken more often by wives than husbands."
She said this contradicted the opinion that women were not as technologically advanced as their male counterparts as many are now a dab hand at computing.
However, it is not impossible for those who are married but looking to strike up a secret affair.
Anyone wishing to avoid prying eyes could benefit from a mobile phone application known as TigerText.
Designed specifically for the iPhone, it allows text messages to be instantly deleted upon reading, removing the adulterous material from the sending and recipient handset and the central server.
