The naughty noughties have proved to be the cheapest time to date an extramarital lover.

According to research by Outpost, the cost of a night on the tiles has fallen dramatically since the high expenses of the late 80s and early 90s.

It found that the average cost of a night out is now £53.89, compared to £32.60 20 years ago. However, taking into account an average inflation rate of 82 per cent, the overall price is actually nine per cent cheaper.

Revellers hoping to get a bit on the side in a night club are facing door charges that are 43 per cent cheaper, while the cost of travel on a night out entertaining has dropped by 25 per cent, the Music Fix reports.

The revelation could be good news for those hoping to a secret lover but were perhaps left feeling out of pocket following the chancellor Alistair Darling's latest alcohol duty hike.

While the married but looking may face a price increase of two per cent on beer, wines and spirits, when compared to last week, the overall price of painting the town red is still significantly lower than that in 1990.

Maybe it was the drastic cost of dating that left so many people unable to afford decent clothes or a fashionable hair cut back in this era.
