Online daters dish out the truth

Online daters dish out the truth Despite concerns that dating online can be a precarious game as potential partners fabricate fake profiles of themselves, internet daters are actually largely honest, a new study shows.

Researchers at the University of Kansas, who questioned 5,000 internet daters between the ages of 18 and 60, found that web users are no more likely to lie than someone you meet in bar, as reported in Metro News.

Although the majority of users proved to be honest, the areas where people did tell fibs seemed to be consistent.

It revealed men were more likely to lie about their profession and social status, while women would perhaps shed a few pounds from their real weight in a bid to bag an extramarital lover.

Professor Jeffrey Hall, who carried out the study, told the news provider: "The good news is that the likelihood of people misrepresenting themselves overall is actually very low.

"Our findings dispel the myth that online daters are that different than anyone else who might find a relationship via friends, school or work."

Perhaps the most fabricated piece of information daters often dish out is their name.

However, research has found that misleading or suggestive usernames can deter suitors, making it harder for adulterers to get a bit on the side.ADNFCR-2938-ID-19674695-ADNFCR
