Around half of all people are likely to have a secret affair at some point in their marriage, according to the findings of one author. In her book The Monogamy Myth, Peggy Vaughn reveals that some 60 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women, which creates a mean average of 50 per cent, are likely to dabble in a spot of infidelity, as cited in Psychology Today.
The online magazine also reports that Ms Maughan discovered the length of time that most adulterous relationships are committed over.
She found that only ten per cent are a one night stand for people looking for a bit of nookie, while half of all extramarital relationships will last for more than one month.
More surprisingly perhaps, some 40 per cent of secret relationships are likely to be extended beyond two years
According to the website, this creates odds of about two-to-one that one partner will be unfaithful, with a four-to-one chance that both individuals will play away from home.
The revelation may come as little surprise to the French after media reports have alleged the country's presidential couple, Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni, are both carrying out secret affairs with other people.
