Don't want to get caught? Make sure you delete your emails
4 Feb 2010
If there's one thing that can be learned from US governor Mark Sanford's secret affair with his mistress, it's that failing to delete your emails could land you in hot water. The South Carolina politician, who enjoyed a year-long extra-marital relationship with an Argentinean woman, got into serious trouble when his wife Jenny read his internet correspondence.
In an interview for ABC News, Ms Sanford told broadcast journalist Barbara Walters that the raunchy emails were the last straw and convinced her to leave her husband following his infidelity.
She said that in them, Mr Sanford had made intimate comments about his lover's body parts and her tan lines.
Of course the governor's emails were obtained by the state, so if you're not a high-profile politician it's unlikely that your messages will be brought to public attention in the way that Mr Sanford's were.
But you might want to make sure that any online correspondence with your bit on the side is permanently deleted and not simply sent to the recycle bin.
