Adultery law could be repealed in New Hampshire
25 Jan 2010
A 200-year-old law defining adultery as a criminal offence in New Hampshire could be repealed. In news that is sure to delight the US state's philandering population, legislators believe the law is unconstitutional.
"I just don't think the state should tell two consenting adults who they can sleep with," state representative Timothy Horrigan told CNN.
It is unclear when authorities in New Hampshire last charged someone with committing this particular offence.
However, the current punishment is substantially more lenient than it was two centuries ago. Now the penalty stands at a $1,200 (£745) fine.
Of course there are some politicians who believe the law should remain in place, but if it does, it's unlikely that adulterers will be a major target for New Hampshire's law enforcers.
Those who are involved in extra-marital relationships in the state should just think themselves lucky they don't live in Somalia.
In December it was reported that a married man in the African country was stoned to death for having sex with another woman.
