Fiftysomething affairs 'becoming more common'
25 Jan 2010
Secret affairs are no longer enjoyed by young people alone and increasing numbers of fiftysomethings are getting in on the act. This is the view of journalist Kate Figes, who said in an article for the Daily Telegraph that it is becoming much more socially acceptable for middle aged people to be open about their sexual relationships.
"With average life expectancy now stretching well into our eighties and props such as Viagra and Botox to shore up our sexual appearance and performance, the fiftysomething affair is common," she remarked.
Ms Figues added that not only is extra-marital dating now more widespread among older people, women are also enjoying more sexual freedom and are doing just as much cheating as men.
She also suggested that infidelity is a real possibility in any marriage, claiming that if relationships are to last a lifetime, couples must face the fact that their other halves may stray at some point.
Similar views were expressed by Jenny Block, author of Open: Love, Sex and Life in an article for Newsweek recently.
She said humans are not naturally monogamous, so infidelity should not come as a surprise to anyone.
