Affairs of literary greats 'more interesting than those of sportsmen'
18 Jan 2010
The infidelities of some of the world's literary greats are far more exciting than those of rock stars or sportsmen and women. This is the view of journalist Michael Deacon, who said in an article for the Daily Telegraph that writers and poets have a "superlative record in adultery".
He points to the likes of Harold Pinter, whose secret affairs have been big news lately as Lady Antonia Fraser has revealed all about her affair and subsequent marriage to the poet in a series of diaries.
Kingsley Amis, who is said to have enjoyed numerous trysts with women at a party, despite his wife being in attendance, is also mentioned.
Mr Deacon talks about Poet Phillip Larkin, who is believed to have had two women on the go for two decades, and novelist Emma Tennant, who wrote an entire memoir about her experience as the mistress of Ted Hughes.
But the journalist claimed that none of these literary greats can beat the philander Graham Greene, who is said to have excused himself from the funeral of his mother-in-law to cheat with a prostitute. His wife was pregnant at the time.
