Infidelity 'shouldn't come as a surprise'
15 Jan 2010
No one should be surprised by infidelity as human beings are not naturally monogamous, according to one relationships expert. In an article for Newsweek, Jenny Block, author of Open: Love, Sex and Life in an Open Marriage, she said studies show that one in three men and one in four women will cheat on their partners at some point.
She claimed that regardless of whether or not someone is a high profile celebrity like Tiger Woods with an attractive model wife, adultery is simply human nature.
"Human beings desire variety. We desire multiple partners. It's a simple fact that's built into our biology," Ms Block explained.
"While some choose monogamy simply because it feels right, I think many more of us choose it because we think it's what we're supposed to do."
The writer isn't the only one to claim that infidelity is a natural desire. French author Maryse Valliant said recently that adultery is a sign of a healthy marriage.
She argued that men often cheat because they need breathing space and insisted that women can find it liberating if their husbands play away.
